The paper deals with analysis of lateral vibration behavior of vertical motor installations. The studies are based on the finite element method. Based on the results obtained with three-dimensional idealization of the stator frame, a simpler two-dimensional model is developed. The latter predicts accurately the first lateral mode. In order to study the nature of rotor-stator interactions, coupled models are also analyzed. The studies reveal that, depending on the relative dynamic characteristics of the rotor and the stator, there can be strong interactions that influence the frequencies considerably.
