The pressure boundary condition at film edges, as formulated in the original Reynolds theory of lubrication, presents an approximation. The internal pressure in the film will normally differ from the external pressure. In this paper, a derivation which involves in-plane stresses and vorticity is presented. As a first-order correction, the boundary condition is formed based on the assumption that the in-plane vorticity on approaching the edges is zero. An advanced theory, resembling Reissner’s theory of plates, is also traced.
