In this paper, hysteresis in attitude-eccentricity loci under conditions of increasing and of decreasing bearing loads is theoretically and experimentally investigated in journal bearings. This hysteresis is explained by the difference in pressure distributions due to the changes in the pressure and position of cavities under these two conditions. The phenomenon of journal shift on the attitude-eccentricity locus is also explained. Experimental results are qualitatively related to the theoretical framework. In addition, some observations are made on the tensile stress in the lubricant as generated in these experiments.
