Abstract
The effects of specimen size on the load-controlled tensile properties of AISI 304, 316, and 310S stainless steels at 4 K were examined at four different stress rates from 0.154 to 154 MPa/s. Diameters of the specimens were 4.5, 6.35, and 8 mm. The stress and strain at the onset of the discontinuous yielding decreased as the stress rate and specimen diameter increased. The effects of the discontinuous yielding on the ultimate tensile strength are discussed. The differences in the effect of the machine control mode on the mechanical properties are also discussed.
