This special issue of the ASCE-ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems: Part B comprises eight papers on recent advances, and current and emerging multidisciplinary approaches in the broad field of decision making under risk and uncertainty. It includes ideas and perspectives from diverse technical and scientific disciplines. The papers demonstrate developments on both fundamental research, and engineering and financial applications of stochastic mechanics and dynamics including control techniques.

A concerted effort was made to achieve broad thematic perspective and geographic representation. This special issue is intended to aid in increasing interest and expansion of the cross-disciplinary field of the quantification, mitigation, and management of risk and uncertainty. This cross-fertilization is necessary for designing and analyzing complex systems.

The papers of this special issue mostly originated and were presented at the Second International Conference on Vulnerability and Risk Analysis and Management (ICVRAM 2014)...
