In a previous work the author enunciated a procedure for the analysis of tension specimen subjected to high pressure. Utilizing these results to define the work-hardening function the present paper attempts to ascertain the external pressure to which a thick-walled tube must be subjected to develop a given deflection at the internal surface of the member. It is found that the predictions of both the distortion energy and maximum shear theories are approximately one standard deviation higher than the experimental results of Bridgman. Thus, both sets of computations lie within the limits of experimental scatter with the calculations of the maximum shear theory representing a slight improvement over those of the distortion energy theory.
