The application of the finite-element method to the analysis of various axisymmetric solids subjected to axisymmetric static loads is described. The analysis accounts for geometric nonlinear effects due to assumed large displacements and rotations and to elastic-plastic deformation. The solutions are obtained by applying an incremental-iterative numerical algorithm. Results are shown for the problem of an internally pressurized thick cylinder where considerable deformation occurred. Comparison with an alternate numerical solution indicates reasonable agreement. Additional numerical examples include the calculation of the collapse load of a built-in spherical dome and the instability load of a flat plate subjected to transverse pressure.
