In this paper, the characteristic parameters of structures are estimated by a newly developed identification method based on the wavelet transform of acceleration measurements. In the proposed method, by using the localized nature and the moment condition of the analyzing wavelet, the equation of motion of the structure is translated to an algebraic equation in terms of the acceleration responses, so that one can identify the structural parameters only using the acceleration measurements. The basic performance of the proposed method and the influence of the observation noise as well as the sampling density of the scale parameter are discussed in numerical examples. Laboratory-scale experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is capable to identify the structural parameters such as damping matrix and the stiffness matrix in sufficient accuracy.
