The validity and range of applicability of a specialized shell theory for nonhomogeneous, anisotropic elastic materials is tested by comparison with a uniformly valid theory. The comparison is carried out for the problem of an edge beam reinforced, pressurized composite cylinder. Included in the comparison is a study of the influence of such design parameters as degree of anisotropy, fiber orientation, thickness and length to radius ratios, and extensional and bending stiffness of the edge beam.
