The International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE) is an annual conference that occupies a special place in the ASME and, particularly, in the Nuclear Engineering Division’s (NED) history. This conference is currently sponsored by the ASME, the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME), and the Chinese Nuclear Society (CNS). The initiative to launch the ICONE came from Professor Saburou Toda of Tohoku University in April 1989. After two years of intensive correspondence, the very first ICONE-1 conference was held in 1991 in Tokyo with the JSME and ASME as sponsors. From rather slow beginnings between the ASME and the JSME, with the initial two meetings in Tokyo and San Francisco, and after some initial support from the French Nuclear Society (SFEN), the ICONE expanded to encompass contributions and participation from over 40 countries. In the year 2000, the Chinese Nuclear Society formally joined the ICONE and hosted ICONE-13 in Beijing...
