Colorectal cancer is a potentially curable cancer affecting more than 140,000 people each year in the United States [1]. Early diagnosis of cancerous polyps significantly increases the chance of treatment such that people who are diagnosed in early stages are more likely to survive longer. However, the uncomfortable nature of conventional colonoscopy discourages potential patients from compliance with recommended diagnostic guidelines. Standard colonoscopy is performed by inserting a flexible colonoscope inside the colon equipped with a video camera, a light source, and suction and biopsy tools. Usually, some pre- and intra-operative actions such as bowel preparation, sedation, and colon insufflation are performed to facilitate colonoscopy. However, the manual insertion of the colonoscope causes bleeding and tissue injuries in some cases (0.2–2.1% incidence), and colonoscope looping accounts for 90% of postprocedural complications [1,2].
