Formation of the coronary vascular system occurs early during development [1]. Evolutionarily, the development of the coronary system is highly variable, for example, invertebrates with hearts have no coronary vessels, lower vertebrates such amphibians and fishes have little to highly complex coronary system and higher vertebrates have well developed coronary vasculature [1,2]. Newts (Urodele amphibian) and zebrafish have a tremendous ability to regenerate the heart in response to injury [3,4]. In Zebrafish, the heart ventricular wall is surrounded with coronary arteries within the subepicardial layer [5]. While the vascular structures are described in many vertebrate hearts, it has not been characterized in the newt heart. Thus information pertaining to the organ morphology including ventricular trabeculation, cellular organization, and presence/absence of the coronary vessels will help decipher the importance of these anatomical structures during...
