Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one the most common malignancy problems in the head and neck and has been reported to be highly aggressive [1,2]. Radiotherapy has been employed as a control method [3]. However, tumor recurrence has been reported to be the primary cause of death in patients suffering from NPC [1]. As such, early detection of NPC recurrence is significant to the success of any salvage surgery [3]. At present, the conventional methods of NPC recurrence monitoring include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). However, these monitoring methods are only carried out periodically and may not be feasible in the context of a relatively long NPC latency period (median of 1.9 years, range of 0.9–11.9 years) [4].
