Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a tumor arising from the epithelial cells that cover the surface and line the nasopharynx [1]. NPC is classified as a form of malignant cancer with three microscopic subtypes: a well-differentiated keratinizing type, a moderately differentiated nonkeratinizing type, and an undifferentiated type that is associated with the Epstein–Barr virus infection of the cancerous cells [2]. It is more common in regions of East Asia and Africa, specifically Southeast Asia. Due to the high tendency for NPC to develop into metastatic dissemination [3], about 30–60% of locally advanced patients will develop distant metastasis and die of disseminated disease [4].
