Using hypothermia treatment for ischemic injuries has been known for years and is generally accepted to effectively reduce the metabolic rate of ischemic tissue and the severity of swelling. Sprains and muscle pulls are commonly treated with ice packs to provide the hypothermia. The simplicity of this treatment allows it to be used nearly at the same time of the injury which, in turn, has contributed to its effectiveness.

Extending therapeutic hypothermic treatments to acute cerebral injuries, including stroke and spinal cord as discussed by Froehler and Ovbiagele [1] and for brain traumatic injuries as discussed by Yenan and Han [2], have shown benefits, and, similar to common ice pack treatments, Ohley [3] has shown that a rapid application of hypothermia generating devices to these types of injuries is also beneficial.
