Implantable meshes are often used as a means of reinforcement during hernia repair. However, implanting, positioning, and securing a mesh patch can be difficult, especially during laparoscopic surgery [1]. Mesh also has the tendency to contract, shrink, or fold during the body's wound healing process, sometimes leading to detachment and migration; all of which still give place for recurrence and chronic pain (in addition to new problems and complications).

To combat these issues and still harness the benefits of mesh reinforcement, mesh-supporting frames have been developed. In 2007, the FDA approved the Rebound HRD (hernia repair device), a product invented by Dr. Rod Brown of Glenwood, MN, which affixed a stranded nitinol cable frame to a hernia mesh [2].
