Monitoring and measuring the respiratory signal is vital in many patient monitoring conditions. Respiration affects the cardiovascular system and modulates the heart rate, heart rate variability, and stroke volume. Therefore, the morphology of heart-related signals changes with respect to respiration phases. In turn, such changes can be used to estimate respiratory signal from electromechanical signals recorded from the body. Electrocardiogram derived respiratory (EDR) is one of these common noninvasive techniques to estimate respiratory signal [1]. Photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal is another method that has been utilized especially to estimate respiratory rate [2]. In addition to electrocardiogram (ECG) and PPG, it is shown that accelerometers placed on the body can be used to extract respiration signals [3–6].
