This December issue not only marks the end of the year 2003, but it also ends the quarterly publication of the Journal of Mechanical Design. In January 2004, the journal begins bimonthly publication. The move to six issues each with 16 to 17 articles will balance production activities and decrease the time to publication of accepted papers.  

I am pleased to introduce three more of our colleagues, who have committed themselves to serving our community as Associate Editors. They are:

 Prof. Clive Dym, Dept. of Engineering, Harvey Mudd College, Technical Area: Design Theory and Methodology

 Prof. Wei Chen, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Northwestern University, Technical Area: Design Automation

 Prof. John Clarkson, Dept. of Engineering, University of Cambridge, Technical Area: Design Theory and Methodology

An Associate Editor processes approximately 20 papers in a year, which means they rely on the contributions of over 60 reviewers each. Please support their efforts to maintain and enhance the quality of the Journal of Mechanical Design.

Clive L. Dym

Dr. Dym is Fletcher Jones Professor of Engineering Design and Director of the Center for Design Education at Harvey Mudd College. His primary interests are in design research, design education, and structural mechanics. Dr. Dym has written or co-authored 10 books, and more than 100 archival publications and technical reports, has won several professional awards, and was Founding Editor of the journal, Artificial Intelligence for Engineering Design, Analysis, and Manufacturing.

Wei Chen

Dr. Chen is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University. Her current research involves issues such as robust design, concept exploration of complex systems, modular design, simulation-based multidisciplinary design, and decision-based design under uncertainty. Dr. Chen received her Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1995. She is the recipient of the 1996 National Science Foundation CAREER Award and the 1998 ASME Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal Achievement Award. Dr. Chen is a member of ASME, INFORMS, ASQC, and an associate fellow of AIAA. She is a member of the ASME Design Automation Executive Committee and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Engineering Optimization.

John Clarkson

Following a seven-year spell with PA Consulting Group’s Technology Division where he was Manager of the Advanced Process Group, John Clarkson returned to the Department of Engineering in the University of Cambridge in 1995. He was appointed Director of the Engineering Design Centre in 1997 and a University Reader in 2001. John is directly involved in the teaching of design at all levels of the undergraduate course. His research interests are in the general area of engineering design, particularly the development of design methodologies to address specific design issues, for example the design of medical equipment, inclusive design and the use of knowledge-based systems in design. As well as publishing over 200 papers in the past eight years he has written a number of practitioner’s workbooks on medical equipment design, inclusive design and design for low-volume manufacture.
