This paper develops an efficient software gage, suitable for real time inspection, to verify compliance with ANSI standard Y14.5 for composite positional tolerancing. The gage consists of a mathematical model and a computer algorithm. The model measures the maximum interference between a part and a feature pattern for any relative positioning of the feature pattern and part. The computer algorithm verifies compliance with the standard by precisely locating the feature pattern in rotation and translation for the minimum maximum interference. This is accomplished by first reducing minimum maximum interference suboptimized in translation to three generalized sets of lower bounds function in rotation and then searching the supremum of the lower bound functions over a unimodal interval of rotations for the global minimum.
