Based on operating features that rigid and pivoted brake shoes have in common, a method is presented for aiding in the force analysis of pivoted brake-shoe systems. The method uses moment equilibrium about the shoe pivot for deriving an equation for locating the line of action of the resultant forces representing the effect of interface normal pressures and traction stresses. It is developed and illustrated in the context of a typical problem. This method of force analysis should provide a useful supplement to design texts in which only qualitative discussion of pivoted brake shoe systems is given.
