A study is made of the motion of crossed helical gears. Exact expressions are derived for the position of the contact point on each gear and for the sliding velocity, both as functions of gear position. It is shown how to calculate the angular positions of each gear at the beginning and end of contact, and hence the contact ratio. And finally, expressions are given for the tooth force and bearing reactions, which are only approximate, in that the effect of friction is neglected.
