This paper explores the use of soft specifications in design optimization by relaxing hard specifications and generating a set of interaction curves. The use of the interaction curves are discussed and applied to two design examples. Classification of interaction curves into two types (A and B) has been defined according to whether or not the objective function surface is a function of the specifications. A convenient way of detecting a global optimum is also described.
