The results of fatigue tests of two thermoplastics (cellulose acetate and polystyrene), three composites (laminated plastics of paper, canvas, and fiberglass) and one aluminum alloy (25-ST) are reported. Four different types of fatigue machines were used to test most of the above materials. The fatigue machines were: rotating-cantilever-beam, constant-amplitude-of-deflection, and constant-amplitude-of-force, types, all of which tested specimens in bending, and a constant-amplitude-of-deflection machine which tested specimens in direct tension and compression. Results from the four machines are compared and the cause of differences is explored.
