High-energy-density jets (0.75 × 106 hp/in.2) resulting from expanding liquid at extremely high pressures are capable of removing solid material from a wide variety of targets. Liquid jets with velocities up to 4000 fps (1220 mps) resulting from 10 kilobars of system pressure were used to penetrate aluminum, steel, rock, and plastic targets. A series of experiments was conducted to determine the effectiveness of materials removal as a function of nozzle-to-target distance and nozzle inlet pressure.
