The experimental and numerical investigations of the heat transfer of supercritical pressure n-decane flowing through a pipe at various rotational speeds, mass flow rates, heat fluxes, and pressures, are presented. This pipe is 2 mm in diameter, 200 mm in length, with a radius of 0.328 m, and is parallel to the rotating axis. The wall temperature was measured at four positions around the periphery of the pipe at each of the five selected cross section along the pipe's length. Maximum convective heat transfer was observed at the outer edge of the horizontal section, while its corresponding minimum was observed at the inner edge. The heat transfers at the two sides of the channel were observed to be similar. The density and pressure differences between the outer and inner edges increased at increasing rotating speeds. However, the temperature difference between the outer and inner edges decreased with increased rotational speed mainly because of the increase of secondary flows in the section. The section's average convective heat transfer coefficient increased with an increase in the rotational speed, and its value at 1000 rpm was approximately twice than that at static conditions. The phenomenon of oscillation was observed near the exit of the horizontal section, and was caused by the flow and considerable property changes near the pseudo critical temperature. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed using the real gas thermal properties and was coupled with the heat transferred owing to fuel flow. The predicted fuel and wall temperatures were in good agreement with the experimental data. A new local Nusselt number correlation of the heat transfer of n-decane in a rotating horizontal section was proposed.

A numerical method was used to study the effect of the broken rib locations on the heat transfer and flow structure in the latticework duct with various rotational numbers. The latticework duct had eleven subchannels on both the pressure side and the suction side. The crossing angle for each subchannel was 45 deg. The numerical studies were conducted with five different broken rib locations and six rotational numbers (0–0.5). The Reynolds number was fixed as 44,000. The flow structure, wall shear stress, and Nusselt number distributions were analyzed. It was found that the upward spiral flow and helical flow dominated the flow structure in the latticework duct. In addition, the impingement region (at the beginning of the subchannel) induced by the upward spiral flow was responsible for the high Nusselt number and wall shear stress. After adoption of the broken rib in the latticework duct, the Nusselt number was increased by 6.12% on the pressure endwall surface and increased by 6.02% on the rib surface compared to the traditional latticework duct. As the rotational number was increased, the Nusselt number on the pressure endwall surface was decreased by up to 5.4%. However, the high rotational number enhanced the heat transfer on the suction side. The high rotational number also decreased the friction factor in the latticework duct. Furthermore, the overall thermal performance was increased by 12.12% after adoption of the broken ribs on both the turn region and the impingement region.

In this paper, the influence of outlet arrangement and plenum structure on impingement cooling is experimentally and numerically investigated in a typical 1-U confined server space. Three outlets include Z-type, bilateral, and U-type arrangements, and the plenum configurations contain partially inclined, fully inclined, and staged layouts. As a result, using the U-type outlet or staged plenum may prominently compromise the impingement cooling performance on the target plates with lower pumping power. With numerical investigation, it is found that, for the case with Z-type outlet, the flowrate of jet impingement increases alongside the streamwise direction. Besides, the impingement stagnation region on target plates with the minimum thermal resistance may shift toward the outlet. Meanwhile, the uniformity of jet impingement can be improved by 10.7% and 50.3% when the bilateral and U-type outlets are applied, respectively, and the jet impingement is changed to perpendicular direction due to the opposite cross flow from the coming flow direction. On the other hand, by applying the inclined plenum and staged plenum, the uniformity of jet impingement can be dramatically improved by 113.9% and 215.1%, respectively. However, the local jet impingement velocity distribution is still nonuniform. Hence, a novel design of impingement plate based on the concept of Coanda effect is proposed. The peak value of the thermal resistance on target plate can be reduced by 21.8% and 16.0% at the center region and the fore part of the jet array.

The design of Ranque–Hilsch vortex tube (RHVT) seems to be interesting for refrigeration and air conditioning purposes in industry. Improving thermal efficiency of the vortex tubes could increase the operability of these innovative facilities for a wider heat and cooling demand to this end; it is of an interest to understand the physical phenomena of thermal and flow patterns inside a vortex tube. In this work, the flow phenomena and the thermal energy transfer in RHVT are studied for three RHVT: straight, divergent, and convergent vortex tubes. A three-dimensional numerical analysis of swirling or vortex flow is performed, verified, and validated against previous experimental and numerical data reported in literature. The flow field and the temperature separation inside an RHVT for different configuration of straight, five angles of divergent hot tube (1 deg, 2 deg, 3 deg, 4 deg, and 6 deg) and five angle of convergent hot tube (0.5 deg, 0.8 deg, 1 deg, 1.5 deg, and 2 deg) are investigated. The thermal performance for all investigated RHVTs configuration is determined and quantitatively assessed via visualizing the stream lines for all three scenarios.

This paper is carried out on the computer simulation of breast cancer treated using a high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). The mathematical models consist of the pressure acoustics equation, bioheat equation, heat transfer in a blood vessel, momentum equations in a blood vessel, and mechanical deformation equation. In the numerical simulation, these mathematical models are solved by using an axisymmetric finite element method (FEM) with time-dependent, thermal and acoustic properties to describe the temperature distribution and the total displacement in tissue. The comparison of the simulated results in the model with two sizes of the cancer tumor and two frequencies of ultrasound are also considered in order to approach realistic tissue modeling. The results show that the breast cancer model with deformation, which is the more accurate way to simulate the physical characteristics of therapeutic breast cancer compared to the literature results, hence leads to more useful in the medical approach and this study was conducted to prevent errors caused by inaccurate focal points.

Heat transfer characteristics in a latticework duct with various sidewalls are numerically investigated. The crossing angle is 90° and the number of sub-channels is eleven on both the pressure side and suction side for each latticework duct. The thickness of the ribs is 8 mm and the distance between adjacent ribs is 24 mm. The investigation is conducted for various Reynolds numbers (11,000 to 55,000) and six different sidewalls. Flow structure, pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics are analyzed. Results revealed that the sidewall has significant effects on heat transfer and flow structure. The triangle shaped sidewall provides the highest Nusselt number accompanied by the highest friction factor. The sidewall with a slot shows the lowest friction factor and Nusselt number. An increased slot width, decreased the Nusselt number and friction factor simultaneously.

Double boundary layer theory was adopted to investigate the distributions of the liquid film, gas film, heat transfer coefficient and condensate mass fluxes around a horizontal tube for vapor condensation with noncondensable gases like steam-air and steam-CO2 mixtures under free convection. The investigation considered the effects of the noncondensable gas concentration, surface subcooling temperature and pressure. The thicknesses of the liquid and gas films increase gradually along the wall from top to bottom, whereas the local heat transfer coefficient and the condensate mass flux decrease. The film thicknesses do not change significantly around the upper part of the tube but increase sharply around the lower part. The liquid film thicknesses, gas film thicknesses, condensate mass fluxes and heat transfer coefficients of steam-air systems are compared with those of steam-CO2 systems. The condesate mass flux in the steam-air system is smaller than that of steam-CO2 system under the condition of the same surface subcooling and gas mass fraction because air has more moles of molecules in the mixture than CO2 and the steam more easily diffuses through CO2 than through air. The predicted average condensation heat transfer coefficients agree well with the available experimental data.

The thermal performance and operating modi of a flat-plate closed-loop pulsating heat pipe (PHP) are experimentally observed. The PHP is manufactured through computer numerical controlled milling and vacuum brazing of stainless steel 316 L. Next to a plain closed-loop PHP, also one that promotes fluid circulation through passive Tesla-type valves was developed. Each channel has a 2 × 2 mm 2 square cross section, and in total, 12 parallel channels fit within the 50 × 200 mm 2 effective area. During the experimental investigation, the power input was increased from 20 W to 100 W, while cooling was performed using a thermo-electric cooler (TEC) and thermostat bath. Three working fluids were assessed: water, methanol, and ammonia. The PHP was charged with a 40% filling ratio. Thermal resistances were obtained for different inclination angles. It was observed that the PHP operates well in vertical evaporator-down orientation but not horizontally. Moreover, experiments show that the minimum operating orientation is between 15 and 30 deg. Two operating modi are observed, namely, the thermosyphon modus, without excessive fluctuations, and the pulsating modus, in which both the temperature and pressure responses oscillate frequently and violently. Overall thermal resistances were determined as low as 0.15 K/W (ammonia) up to 0.28 and 0.48 K/W (water and methanol, respectively) at a power input of 100 W in the vertical evaporator-down orientation. Infrared thermography was used to visualize the working fluid behavior within the PHPs. Infrared observations correlated well with temperature and pressure measurements. The experimental results demonstrated that the developed flat-plate PHP design, suitable for high-volume production, is a promising candidate for electronics cooling applications.

Recently, a novel temperature control technique utilizing the unique thermohydraulic operating principles of the pressure-controlled loop heat pipes (PCLHPs) was proposed and proved its effectiveness, by which a faster and more stable temperature control was possible by means of the pressure control. However, due to its recent emergence, the proposed hydraulic temperature control technique has not been fully characterized in terms of the various operating parameters including the sink temperature. In this work, the effect of the sink temperature on the loop heat pipe (LHP)-based hydraulic temperature control was investigated to improve the stability of the proposed technique. Start-up characteristics and transient responses of the operating temperatures to different pressure steps and sink temperatures were examined. From the test results, it was found that there was a minimum sink temperature, which ensured a steady-state operation after the start-up and a stable hydraulic temperature control with the increasing pressure steps, due to the unstable balance between the heat leak and the liquid subcooling in the compensation chamber at low sink temperatures. In addition, the range of the stable hydraulic temperature control was extended with the increasing coolant temperature due to the decreased heat leak, which resulted in the increased pressure difference between the evaporator and the compensation chamber. Therefore, it was found and suggested that for a stable hydraulic temperature control in an extended range, it was necessary to operate the PCLHP at higher sink temperatures than the low limit.

A low-cost, flexible pulsating heat pipe (PHP) was built in a composite polypropylene sheet consisting of three layers joint together by selective laser welding, to address the demand of heat transfer devices characterized by low weight, small unit thickness, low cost, and high mechanical flexibility. A thin, flexible, and lightweight heat pipe is advantageous for various aerospace, aircraft, and portable electronic applications where the device weight, and its mechanical flexibility are essential. The concept is to sandwich a serpentine channel, cut out in a polypropylene sheet and containing a self-propelled mixture of a working fluid with its vapor, between two transparent sheets of the same material; this results into a thin, flat enclosure with parallel channels hence the name “pulsating heat stripes” (PHS). The transient and steady-state thermal response of the device was characterized for different heat input levels and different configurations, either straight or bent at different angles. The equivalent thermal resistance was estimated by measuring the wall temperatures at both the evaporator and the condenser, showing a multifold increase of the equivalent thermal conductance with respect to solid polypropylene.

Gallium nitride (GaN) is an attractive material for manufacturing light emitting diodes and other electronic devices due to its wide band-gap and superb optoelectronic performance. The quality of GaN thin film determines the reliability and durability of these devices. Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) is a common technique used to fabricate high-quality GaN thin films. In this paper, GaN growth rate and uniformity in a vertical rotating disk MOCVD reactor are investigated on the basis of a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. GaN growth rate is investigated under the influence of reactor pressure, precursor concentration ratio, and composition of the carrier gas mixture. The numerical simulation shows that the carrier gas mixture and the reactor pressure have significant effects on growth rate and uniformity of GaN thin films. It is also found that an appropriate mixture of N 2 and H 2 may be employed as the carrier gas to improve the flow field characteristic in the reactor. This results in an improved crystal growth of GaN thin films.

An experimental and numerical study has been conducted on heat transfer and turbulent flow structure in channels with novel hybrid structures with miniature V-shaped ribs and dimples on one wall. One miniature V-shaped rib was arranged immediately upstream each individual dimple to form the hybrid structure, which aims at inducing additional near-wall secondary flow interacting with the dimple vortex flow and further improving the heat transfer. Steady-state convective heat transfer experiments were done to obtain the heat transfer and pressure loss of the turbulent flow over the surfaces with the miniature V rib-dimples for the Reynolds numbers from 18,700 to 60,000. In addition, the turbulent flow structure in the V rib-dimpled channels has been predicted by carrying out numerical computations. The experimental results indicated that the overall heat transfer enhancement of the miniature V rib-dimpled channels can be increased by up to about 60.0% compared with the counterpart of the dimpled only channel, and by about 23.0% compared with the counterpart of the miniature V ribbed only channel. The miniature V ribs showed appreciable effects on the heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics for the turbulent flow over the V rib-dimpled surfaces. The numerical computations showed that the miniature V rib upstream each dimple produced strong near-wall downwashing secondary flow, which significantly changed the flow patterns and intensified the turbulent flow mixing inside and outside the dimple and above the surrounding wall. These unique near-wall flow characteristics generated a significant heat transfer improvement in both the magnitude and the uniformity.

Desalination systems can be conceptualized as power cycles in which the useful work output is the work of separation of fresh water from saline water. In this framing, thermodynamic analysis provides powerful tools for raising energy efficiency. This paper discusses the use of entropy generation minimization for a spectrum of desalination technologies, including those based on reverse osmosis (RO), humidification–dehumidification (HDH), membrane distillation (MD), electrodialysis (ED), and forward osmosis (FO). Heat and mass transfer are the primary causes of entropy production in these systems. The energy efficiency of desalination is shown to be maximized when entropy generation is minimized. Equipartitioning of entropy generation is considered and applied. The mechanisms of entropy generation are characterized, including the identification of major causes of irreversibility. Methods to limit discarded exergy are also identified. Prospects and technology development needs for further improvement are mentioned briefly.

A new oscillating heat pipe (OHP) charged with hybrid fluids can improve thermal performance. The key difference in this OHP is that it uses room temperature liquid metal (Galinstan consisting of gallium, indium, and tin) and water as the working fluid. The OHP was fabricated on a copper plate with six turns and a 3 × 3 mm 2 cross section. The OHP with hybrid fluids as the working fluid was investigated through visual observation and thermal measurement. Liquid metal was successfully driven to flow through the OHP by the pressure difference between the evaporator and the condenser without external force. Experimental results show that while added liquid metal can increase the heat transport capability, liquid metal oscillation amplitude decreases as the filling ratio of liquid metal increases. Visualization of experimental results show that liquid metal oscillation position and velocity increase as the heat input increases. Oscillating motion of liquid metal in the OHP significantly increases the heat transfer performance at high heat input. The lowest thermal resistance of 0.076 °C/W was achieved in the hybrid fluids-filled OHP with a heat input of 420 W. We experimentally demonstrated a 13% higher heat transfer performance using liquid metal as the working fluid compared to an OHP charged with pure water.

In this work, the effectiveness of the numerical simulations in advancing fundamental understanding of bubble dynamics and nucleate pool boiling heat transfer is discussed. The results of numerical simulations are validated with experiments on ground, in parabolic flights and on the International Space Station (ISS). As such validation is carried out when the level of gravity is varied over seven orders of magnitude. It is shown that reduced gravity stretches the length and time scales of the process and generally leads to degradation of rate of heat transfer associated with nucleate boiling.

Recently, two-phase cryogenic flow boiling data in liquid nitrogen (LN 2 ) and liquid hydrogen (LH 2 ) were compared to the most popular two-phase correlations, as well as correlations used in two of the most widely used commercially available thermal/fluid design codes in Hartwig et al. (2016, “Assessment of Existing Two Phase Heat Transfer Coefficient and Critical Heat Flux on Cryogenic Flow Boiling Quenching Experiments,” Int. J. Heat Mass Transfer, 93 , pp. 441–463). Results uncovered that the correlations performed poorly, with predictions significantly higher than the data. Disparity is primarily due to the fact that most two-phase correlations are based on room temperature fluids, and for the heating configuration, not the quenching configuration. The penalty for such poor predictive tools is higher margin, safety factor, and cost. Before control algorithms for cryogenic transfer systems can be implemented, it is first required to develop a set of low-error, fundamental two-phase heat transfer correlations that match available cryogenic data. This paper presents the background for developing a new set of quenching/chilldown correlations for cryogenic pipe flow on thin, shorter lines, including the results of an exhaustive literature review of 61 sources. New correlations are presented which are based on the consolidated database of 79,915 quenching points for a 1.27 cm diameter line, covering a wide range of inlet subcooling, mass flux, pressure, equilibrium quality, flow direction, and even gravity level. Functional forms are presented for LN 2 and LH 2 chilldown correlations, including film, transition, and nucleate boiling, critical heat flux, and the Leidenfrost point.

This study investigates the effects of blowing ratio, density ratio, and spanwise pitch on the flat plate film cooling from two rows of compound angled cylindrical holes. Two arrangements of two-row compound angled cylindrical holes are tested: (a) the first row and the second row are oriented in staggered and same compound angled direction ( β = +45 deg for the first row and +45 deg for the second row); (b) the first row and the second row are oriented in inline and opposite direction ( β = +45 deg for the first row and −45 deg for the second row). The cooling hole is 4 mm in diameter with an inclined angle of 30 deg. The streamwise row-to-row spacing is fixed at 3d, and the spanwise hole-to-hole (p) is varying from 4d, 6d to 8d for both designs. The film cooling effectiveness measurements were performed in a low-speed wind tunnel in which the turbulence intensity is kept at 6%. There are 36 cases for each design including four blowing ratios (M = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0), three density ratios (DR = 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0), and three hole-to-hole spacing (p/d = 4, 6, and 8). The detailed film cooling effectiveness distributions were obtained by using the steady-state pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) technique. The spanwise-averaged cooling effectiveness are compared over the range of flow parameters. Some interesting observations are discovered including blowing ratio effect strongly depending on geometric design; staggered arrangement of the hole with same orientation does not yield better effectiveness at higher blowing ratio. Currently, film cooling effectiveness correlation of two-row compound angled cylindrical holes is not available, so this study developed the correlations for the inline arrangement of holes with opposing angles and the staggered arrangement of holes with same angles. The results and correlations are expected to provide useful information for the two-row flat plate film cooling analysis.

Air turbine power generation system is considered as a feasible power generation system for hypersonic aircraft with Mach 6. However, the incoming air with high temperature cannot be used as coolant while turbine has to be cooled. Since hydrocarbon fuel is the only cooling source onboard, the scheme of fuel cooling air turbine is put forward. In this paper, square cooling channel, including inlet part, outlet part and U-duct, is established based on the typical air turbine. The hydraulic diameter of the channel is 2 mm and four types of U-ducts are used to compare the performance with simulation using k-Epsilon turbulence model. The density and specific heat capacity of fuel are considered as constant as the temperature difference in this study is small. The Reynolds number varies from 2760 to 16,559 and rotating number ranges from 0 to 6.9. The results show that the pressure distribution in radial direction is proportional to the square of radial distance and the square of rotating speed. The regulations of velocity and normalized Nusselt number distributions depend on rotating number. Furthermore, the heat transfer is enhanced with fin while the pressure loss is also increased. The position of fins cannot significantly influence pressure loss but can influence heat transfer obviously. The normalized Nusselt number of inlet-fin U-duct is higher than the outlet-fin U-duct both on leading side surface and trailing side (TS) surface, while the pressure losses for the two types of ducts are almost same.

We study hydrodynamics, heat transfer, and entropy generation in pressure-driven microchannel flow of a power-law fluid. Specifically, we address the effect of asymmetry in the slip boundary condition at the channel walls. Constant, uniform but unequal heat fluxes are imposed at the walls in this thermally developed flow. The effect of asymmetric slip on the velocity profile, on the wall shear stress, on the temperature distribution, on the Bejan number profiles, and on the average entropy generation and the Nusselt number are established through the numerical evaluation of exact analytical expressions derived. Specifically, due to asymmetric slip, the fluid momentum flux and thermal energy flux are enhanced along the wall with larger slip, which, in turn, shifts the location of the velocity's maximum to an off-center location closer to the said wall. Asymmetric slip is also shown to redistribute the peaks and plateaus of the Bejan number profile across the microchannel, showing a sharp transition between entropy generation due to heat transfer and due to fluid flow at an off-center-line location. In the presence of asymmetric slip, the difference in the imposed heat fluxes leads to starkly different Bejan number profiles depending on which wall is hotter, and whether the fluid is shear-thinning or shear-thickening. Overall, slip is shown to promote uniformity in both the velocity field and the temperature field, thereby reducing irreversibility in this flow.

In the present work, a numerical analysis of conjugate heat transfer and fluid flow in vortex generator (VG) enhanced double-fin and tube heat exchanger is carried out. The enhanced design aims to improve the heat transfer performance of a conventional double-fin and tube heat exchanger for waste heat recovery applications. A three-dimensional (3D) numerical model is developed using ANSYS cfx to simulate fluid flow and conjugate heat transfer process. Numerical simulations with rectangular winglet vortex generators (RWVGs) at five different angles of attack ( − 20 deg ≤ α ≤ 20 deg ) are performed for the Reynolds number range of 5000 ≤ Re ≤ 11 , 000 . Salient performance characteristics are analyzed in addition to the temperature distribution and flow fields. Based on the numerical results, it is concluded that the overall performance of the double-fin and tube heat exchanger can be improved by 27–91% by employing RWVGs at α = − 20 deg for the range of Reynolds number investigated. The study provides useful design information and necessary performance data that can be adopted for the design development of the heat exchanger at a lower manufacturing cost.
