The paper seeks to clarify the case for the shore testing of a set of ship’s propulsion machinery and argues it to be particularly pressing where gas turbines are employed. The Shore Test Facility built for the Royal Navy’s Command Cruiser is described and the progress with testing covered briefly. The benefits of this particular installation are shown to be significant, such that a large number of improvements can be incorporated in the design prior to installation in the ship and at a substantial cost saving. The limitations of shore testing are also mentioned.
