Scale model testing and flow visualization techniques were used to achieve substantial reductions in stack entrance total pressure loss levels. This paper presents the loss coefficient results for three different model configurations for the stack entrance section at the bottom of a 700-ft power plant chimney. For the best configuration, an average stack entrance loss coefficient of 0.39 was achieved which represents a reduction of loss coefficient by a factor of 4.5 below the original unvaned design. For the lowest loss configuration, the entrance loss for one or several ducts can be substantially reduced below the other duct entrances by the correct specification of the velocity levels of the joining flow streams at the static pressure matching point.
