The author explores the psychiatric aspects of imprisonment, stressing the psychic trauma that imprisonment imposes on the individual. The paper argues that the current structure of prisons makes rehabilitation virtually impossible and describes how prisons, in large measure, deal with psychiatrically disturbed individuals without adequate resources.
