The ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering (JFE) and the ASME Fluids Engineering Division (FED) present a special issue of papers that were presented at 2024 FED Summer Meeting (FEDSM2024). The conference was held at the Hilton Anaheim, Anaheim, CA from July 15–17, 2025. The conference chair was Dr. Marianne Francois (Los Alamos National Laboratory) and the conference co-chair was Dr. Ning Zhang (McNeese State University).

The Special Issue dedicated to this conference includes nine papers invited based on their conference presentations and full-paper submission. The collection of topics includes both experimental and numerical studies on flows in biological systems, multiphase flow, turbomachinery, and turbulence. I am grateful for the assistance from the six FED technical committees, whereby the committee chairs and co-chairs provided recommendations. Special thanks to Dr. Shanti Bhushan and Dr. Chengyu Li from the Computational Fluid Dynamics Technical Committee; Dr. Ernesto Primera, Dr. Aarthi Sekaran, and Dr. Tamy Guimaraes from the Fluid Applications and Systems Technical Committee; Dr. Yang Liu and Dr. Keldon Anderson from the Fluid Measurement and Instrumentation Technical Committee; Dr. Bei Fan and Dr. Jinxiang Xi from the Fluid Mechanics Technical Committee; Dr. Mehdi Salek and Dr. Sangjin Ryu from the Micro and Nano Fluid Dynamics Technical Committee; and Dr. Bertrand Rollin, Dr. Jingsen Ma, and Dr. Cristian Marchioli from the Multiphase Flow Technical Committee.

The Special Issue also presents the winners of the Flow Visualization competition, organized by Professor Philipp Epple. The 2024 winners in the video category were:

  • First Place: “Direct Numerical Simulation of a Bed of 67 Pebbles,” David Reger, Elia Merzari, and Yassin Hassan

  • Second Place: “Water Film Flow on the Surface of an Airfoil in a High-Speed Flow and Subsequent Atomization from the Trailing Edge,” Safiullah Safiullah and Vincent McDonell

  • Honorable Mention: “Numerical and Experimental Flow Visualization of a Jet Flow around a Cylinder,” Philipp Epple and Manuel Fritsche

  • Honorable Mention: “Numerical and Experimental Flow Visualization of a Sphere in the Wind Tunnel,” Manuel Fritsche and Philipp Epple

In closing, my sincerest gratitude is extended to our colleagues who served as reviewers, and of course the authors, whose contributions comprise the Special Issue. I would also like to acknowledge the JFE associate editors who shared in the responsibilities to support the Special Issue. We are indebted to the JFE editorial assistant, Ms. Elizabeth Bruce, who helped ensure timely processing, and the support of the ASME staff, especially Ms. Erica Hodge, Ms. Tamiko Fung, and Ms. Lauren Murrah.
