Paper deals with elastic waves which may be generated in quiescent fluid by displacement of the surrounding flow boundary. In particular, the piston problem of induced laminar motion in waveguides of circular cross section is treated analytically by means of an “extended” version of the Iberall model of fluid transients. It yields closed-form solutions for the arbitrary pressure response of semi-infinite, distensible waveguides containing compressible Newtonian fluid. The solutions account for elastic as well as inertial effects of the flow boundary, and reveal several new properties of signal propagation in tubes.
