Experiments were performed to obtain information concerning the action of high velocity liquid jets impacting at velocities that erode the target surface (1000–4000 fps, 305–1200 mps). Nozzle pressure, impact force and target temperature data were obtained using a quasisteady flow system at pressures up to 146,000 psi (1007 MN/m2). Under no-flow conditions, the system was used to determine liquid compressibility for a diester synthetic hydraulic fluid. The jet flow data are compared to results from a calculational model for quasisteady flow.
