Abstract

The widespread use of the water jet combined with a centrifugal pump to create what is commonly called a “jet pump” for domestic water systems, directs attention to the determination of its operating characteristics in terms of its components. The relative importance of this type of pumping equipment is illustrated by Department of Commerce data which show that in 1948 fifty-six companies shipped 649,143 units having a factory value of $50,704,294. Of these, 325,220 were of the jet type valued at $27,298,250. While the units are usually small and can be tested readily to obtain data on the operating characteristics, an engineering analysis would serve to emphasize the essential design constants.
