It is a great honor for us to present this RAN98 Special Issue of the Journal of Energy Resources Technology (JERT), which consists of two invited keynote papers and eleven technical papers. These papers have been selected from RAN98, the 2nd International Symposium on Advanced Energy Conversion Systems and Related Technologies held at Nagoya University, Japan, December 1–3, 1998. The covered research fields of this special issue are Energy Conversion Systems, Combustion Fundamentals, Advanced Combustion Technologies, Advanced Materials & Processing, and Material Recycling.

We are pleased to include the keynote papers, “Advanced Coal-Fired Power Plants,” by L. A. Ruth of the US Department of Energy, and “High Temperature Reliability of Advanced Ceramics,” by T. Ohji of the National Industrial Research Institute of Nagoya. L. A. Ruth presents two coal-based systems: low-emission boiler systems (LEBS) and high-performance power systems (HPPS) based...
