In this chapter, we will see how the product developer can reduce the lifecycle costs of a product, thus providing advantages to the user. Their importance is discussed in the explanations given in Sect. 2.1. It is clear that modifying lifecycle costs is possible only by keeping close contact with the customer — the user. This has great potential for development benefits in machine engineering as well as in plant engineering. Often, the user does not know the principal factors in the lifecycle cost structure but the manufacturer can alter them by changing technical parameters.
Topics:
Life cycle costing
5.1 What are lifecycle costs?
5.2 What influences the lifecycle costs?
5.3 How to develop a product to a lifecycle cost target?
5.4 Extending service life to lower lifecycle costs
5.5 Examples of reducing lifecycle costs
