We now shift our focus to the manufacturing sector. Managing a manufacturing plant or division requires a completely different mindset than sales or development. Salespeople believe that the customer is always right, but if the design and development engineers believed that, they might end up with dead customers. In manufacturing, the customer most likely may never meet the individuals making the product for them. While the salespeople are always in front of the customer and the design or development team at least meets a sample of the customer base during product research and development, manufacturing is typically static in their location and must rely on others to determine the acceptable product quality level.
So how does a manager hold the staff accountable to the people that they will never meet? This is the challenge in the manufacturing area.
