From a pipeline operator's viewpoint, the common elements between the aspects of pipeline geo-environmental design and geohazard management discussed in this book are the pipeline company's responsibility to protect the environment in the vicinity of the pipeline and its business interest to protect the pipeline from potentially adverse environmental conditions. The daily work in pipeline companies in the topics addressed in this book is executed in the multidisciplinary space shared by project managers, pipeline engineers, construction staff and both geotechnical and hydrotechnical specialists.

Five widely applicable and critically important topics to pipeline designers and operators were selected to be addressed by recognized specialists in their respective fields. Brief biographic summaries of the invited contributing authors are included at the end of the book. The structure of the book and the contributing authors is as follows:

- Chapter 2: Pipeline Route Selection and Characterization by Dr. Jack Mollard, Mr. Lynden Penner and Mr. Troy Zimmer

- Chapter 3: Open Cut and Elevated Pipeline River Crossings by Mr. Wim jectman

- Chapter 4: Horizontal Directional Drilling by Mr. John Hair and Mr. Jeffrey Puckett

- Chapter 5: Overland Buoyancy Control by Mr. Ray Boivin

- Chapter 6: Geohazard Management by Mr. Moness Rizkalla, Dr. Rodney Read and Mr. Gregg O'Neil
