Heat transfer from a surface can be enhanced by using fins. Heat transfer from surfaces with different types of fins has been studied extensively, as seen in References by Incropera, F. P. and D. P. DeWitt [6] and by F. Kreith [10].

The present sensitivity analysis represents rectangular fins under steady-state, one-dimensional, constant thermophysical property conditions without radiation heat transfer. Energy balance to a cross-sectional element of a rectangular fin gives the following second order and linear differential equation for the temperature distribution along the length of the fin.
