Despite the fact that project management is one of the oldest accomplishments of mankind, from the extraordinary achievements of the builders of the Egyptian pyramids, the Babylonian suspended gardens and the Great Wall of China, the great majority of companies today still do not rely on any structured form of project management. Managing by walking around is still very common; simply popping one's head in a team member's office and asking, “Hi Joshua! How's it going?” can be a very efficient and informal way to manage projects. If you keep doing this across the team a few times a month, you will find that either your project is performing well, or that you need a new team.
The problem is that in a fast-paced world such as ours, speed is everything. If we can't deliver a project fast enough, someone else in the world can, using virtual teams and virtual project management techniques.
