Issues of safety and environmental health are of primary concern to pipeline companies, regulatory bodies, stakeholder groups and the general public alike. As part of day-to-day operations, pipeline owners and operators are required to document an ever growing amount of information to demonstrate their compliance with engineering standards, safety and environmental regulations, and record management requirements set out by various regulatory bodies. In this chapter we will examine a variety of ways in which Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology is being used - and could be used in the future - in the Pipeline Regulatory Process.
6.1 Using GIS to Support Regulatory Compliance
6.2 Regulatory Bodies and Legislation
6.3 Future Trends
