A system can be described as an instrumentality that unifies interacting and interrelated units designed to function as a coherent entity. Alternatively, it is an assemblage of independent but interrelated elements, components, or units that constitute a unified whole. Each of these may individually be systems by themselves, but when combined with other systems to constitute a larger multifunctional unit or system, these become subsystems or elements. For example, a personal computer is a system that is constituted of memory, main storage, input—output devices, central processing unit (CPU), etc. The computer usually has peripheral subsystems. Some of these are external while others are internal. Examples of external units include the keyboard, monitor, printer, PC or PCMCIA cards, multimedia cards, Ethernet cards, mouse, etc., whereas internal peripherals include CD-ROMs, disk drives, batteries, modem, etc. Internal peripherals are also referred to as integrated peripherals. Figure 5.1 shows the general concept of system packaging. Special connectors and cabling assemblies enable the interconnecting of subsystems.
