Surface water is generally defined as a body of water that is exposed to the atmosphere, and includes ponds, lakes, oceans, and rivers. Use of surface water as a heat exchange medium is not a new idea, but has seen increasing popularity in recent decades in parallel with the growth of geothermal heat pumps. As such, surface water heat exchange falls under the umbrella of low-temperature geothermal energy utilization.
