This chapter covers the contents of API RP 578: Guidelines for a Material Verification Programme (MVP) for New and Existing Assets: 2018. It’s a short document (20 pages) which from 2021 is included in the BoK for the API 510 and 570 examinations. Previously it was only included in the API 570 BoK. It addresses the problem of incorrect materials finding their way into pressure systems, using the term substitution. This means undesired substitution of specified materials with something different, not the problem of incorrect material choice in the first place (API RP 571 deals with that). Here’s some points about this substitution.
