The simple lumped capacitance method of solving transient heat transfer problems was introduced in Chapter 2. This method can also be applied to composite systems as long as each lump of the composite system satisfies Bilump < 0.1. In this chapter, we will determine the temperature-time history of water in a thin-walled cubic aluminum container which is immersed in engine oil which is also contained in a thin-walled chromium-steel container as shown in Figure 3-1. Initially, this whole composite system is at 20 C and it is suddenly immersed into a large environment that is filled with water at 90 C.
