In this chapter, we discuss some of the properties (eigenvectors and eigenvalues) of matrices and our concentration will be on square matrices. We will then discuss singular value decomposition (SVD) and generalize the results for both square and nonsquare matrices. There are several texts and technical publications that discuss these topics in details. Our hope here is to provide some insight into these topics that are very relevant in MIMO control design. We start this chapter by discussing eigenvalues and eigenvectors next.
