Excessive flow-induced vibration may cause damage by fatigue or by fretting wear. Fatigue is a relatively well understood damage mechanism. It is the subject of a number of books and design guidelines. Maximum dynamic stresses can be estimated from the vibration response and the number of dynamic stress cycles can be easily calculated from the response frequency. These two parameters are then used to estimate acceptability or fatigue life of components. Since fatigue damage information is already available and well documented, this chapter will focus on themuch less well understood fretting-wear damage mechanisms.
