There are several flow-induced vibration excitation mechanisms that could cause excessive vibration in both process and nuclear system components. These are: fluidelastic instability, periodic-wake-shedding resonance, turbulence-induced excitation and acoustic resonance. Of these, fluidelastic instability is by far the most important. In our experience, most vibration problems in components such as heat exchangers and steam generators are related to fluidelastic instability.
