One maxim that I’ve used over the years has been that “we must learn from the past, use it in the present to get to the future.” For project management this challenge is tough to overcome because past examples are not perfect representations of the present. This is true because projects are unique. However, we must learn lessons from every project in which we participate, cooperate or lead and use these to grow as professionals. The variety of challenges that face each project manager are as diverse and unique as the projects themselves. One would not expect to find the exact challenges in organizing a cross-country band tour as building a skyscraper, but planning, execution and control techniques are all needed regardless of the project type.
