An engine that draws air directly from the surroundings at ambient temperature and pressure is known as natural-induction engine or naturally aspirated engine. In this book, the term natural-induction engine will be predominantly used. As for cycles, the terms ideal cycle and air-standard cycle will be used interchangeably. In this chapter, four air-standard cycles will be examined to establish the theoretical potential of the reciprocating internal combustion piston engine (piston engine henceforward).

3.1
Generalised Cycle
3.2
Constant-Volume Cycle (Otto Cycle)
3.3
Constant Pressure (Diesel) Cycle
3.4
Dual Cycle (Pressure-Limited Cycle)
3.5
