When studying theoretical cycles, the source of the heat input into a particular cycle is immaterial. In fuel-air and practical cycles, however, the heat source is usually a hydrocarbon fuel that reacts with an oxidant, producing heat and various gaseous products. Thermodynamics of reactive mixtures, or thermochemistry, is essentially the basic chemistry behind the reaction of hydrocarbon fuels with the oxygen of the air and broadly referred to as combustion. Combustion is a rapid exothermic chemical reaction between a fuel and the oxygen of the air, resulting in liberation of heat accompanied by bright flame.
