The implementation of a full magnetic suspension into a blood pump can take various forms and both centrifugal and axial pumps have been designed and prototyped since the mid to late 1990s. This section is meant to give a brief description of the range of devices that have gone through at least chronic animal studies. It is not meant to be exhaustive and there are still many groups working on magnetically levitated pumps that are not as far along in development and testing.
